Hike to Waterfall

This is a serious African adventure! The stunning 80-meter Murombodzi Waterfall is your prize at the end of this journey but you’ll have to earn it!

You leave at 7am and drive for about 90 minutes on good roads, to the turn for Mount Gorongosa. Now, hang on! You do over an hour’s worth of bumpy 4x4 driving on a dirt road up through banana and maize fields, passing through little rural communities on the way. You reach the trailhead just before 10am.

Then, it’s about an hour’s hike to the waterfall itself. The hike is mostly level and fairly easy (with occasional brief inclines) on a dirt path. However, there are a couple of challenging moments close to the end of the hike. One involves crossing a stream, where you must remove your shoes, hitch up your trousers and use stepping stones to cross. (Your guide can help.) And just before the waterfall itself, there is a small section where you have to “scramble” up over some big rocks. Once you’re past this final obstacle, you’re home and dry!

But you won't be dry for long, if you have brought along your swimming trunks! The 'wild swimming' at this amazing waterfall is an experience you will remember forever. Even if you don’t want to swim, the waterfall is an incredible sight to see and especially hear!

A simple, self-serve, picnic-style lunch is included (ham, cheese and tomato rolls, some pound cake, fresh fruit and water or soda). Rain is a possibility at certain times of year on the mountain. Rain ponchos will be provided but guests should pack a warm fleece in case it's a little chilly.

Total time (round-trip from Chitengo): 9+ hours.

(Please note: there are no toilet facilities along the way other than those that Nature has provided!)

Rate: 2,100 MT ($74 USD) per person
