"Gorongosa's secret is the extraordinary diversity of its landscape and the many waterholes…which attract flocks of birds, such as marabou storks and spurwing geese." - Sydney Morning Herald
Dry season is a great time to see birds on Lake Urema and its rivers. In one particular location, on the Sungue River, hundreds of thousands of fishing birds come to take advantage of the lower water levels. It's an absolute feeding frenzy. Many young birds use this time to perfect their fishing technique: storks, hammerkops and juvenile fish eagles all come here for training. As many as 35 species have been seen in a couple of hours.
