Seasonal Water

In addition to Lake Urema, and a large network of seasonal and perennial rivers, the Gorongosa ecosystem is rich in smaller, mostly seasonal bodies of water. Two large marsh areas are important sanctuaries of aquatic life, the Mucodza Marsh in the Midlands and the Dingedinge Marsh at the confluence of the Urema and Pungue rivers. Following the seasonal flooding of the Valley floor, as the waters of the Lake and Pungue River recede, they leave behind countless ponds and pans that will supply animals with water for the next several months.
