In Dar es Salaam we stayed at a hotel we nicknamed "the Chicken hotel" as it was adjacent to a big market stall full of chickens. We wanted to cover some territory so we pushed off early in the morning and drove to Kilwa Masoko in south-eastern Tanzania. The roads were mostly good until we hit tarmac that was full of enormous potholes and there were huge rainstorms that day. Despite the weather and roads, the Land Rover is running better than ever.
We arrived at Kilwa Masoko, which is a remote spot near a World Heritage site with ancient Arab ruins. No one seems to camp along the beach so we had the whole area to ourselves.
That night, I made my first-ever fresh pasta sauce from a pile of tomatoes I bought along the road. We didn't really eat yesterday or today yet so I think this is going to be good!
Next, we plan to drive south towards Mtwara (the town on the Ruvuma River) and camp somewhere on the Tanzanian side before crossing into Mozambique at the Unity Bridge.
