Lion cubs aren’t just playing for the fun of it

April 10, 2013

The joyful scene of lion cubs rolling around in play reminds me of kids in a schoolyard. As they frolic, they seem genuinely happy and they probably are. But there is more behind this play than even the cubs themselves realize.

From the time of birth, they are in training for their lives as adult lions. Every playful pounce on their brother or sister hones their skills to quietly crouch and capture prey. Every wrestling match with an older, bigger sibling teaches them the techniques they need to bring down a buffalo many times their size.

There are five brand new cubs that were born this year in Gorongosa and they are likely out there right now, training for their future as kings of Gorongosa.
