Close Encounter at Lion House

March 11, 2013

My family often visited Gorongosa National Park in the 1950’s and 1960’s. On one occasion when we arrived, the “grown ups” laid out a picnic table while I explored the Lion House. I will never forget the moment I got to the top of the steps seeing a pride sleeping on the roof. I turned to run down, only to see a young lion at the bottom about to climb the staircase.

I vaulted over the rail and ran towards my Dad, only to see another lion directly between the picnickers and myself. The pride was relaxed and totally disinterested in this 7-year-old explorer.
