Best of Facebook - Praying Mantids

November 16, 2012

"Earlier this year I worked for a couple of months in Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique, conducting a survey of a few insect groups, including praying mantids. I brought with me a bunch of preserved specimens and some (what I thought were) empty egg cases. But two weeks after my return I was stunned to discovered that one of my dried up and "dead" mantis egg cases wasn't dead at all, and a bunch of little praying mantids had hatched. Only a small handful survived, and one has just reached adulthood. Here she is, looking at an earlier version of herself (this is of course a composite of two photos, taken nearly 4 months apart.)" - Piotr Naskrecki See on Facebook
